From The Desk of Dr. Dixon | Honoring Black History: Celebrating Culture, Progress, and Health Equity

Authored by Dr. Rena P. Dixon, MPH, MCHES

Chief Executive Officer

Black History Month is a celebration of the achievements, culture, and history of Black people in America. This is an opportunity to learn, educate, and uplift. We celebrate artists, inventors, educators, innovators, activists, and change-makers.

While some may think focusing on Black Americans is divisive, it’s not. Focus is different from division. We can recognize each other's histories and experiences without dividing us. Black history is American history; it matters to our nation's past and future. Each February as we celebrate, we seek to understand the past to create a better, more unified future, together. We honor the progress that has been made, while acknowledging there is still work to be done.

Fact Forward has a rich history in the field of public health. The discipline of public health lies at the intersection of science and social justice. Its goal is to promote health and prevent disease through education, research, and advocacy. Understanding culture, working to eliminate systemic barriers, promoting health equity in Black communities is fundamental to the discipline of public health.  We are actively taking steps to advance commitments to eliminate health disparities impacting Black/African Americans and reproductive health. Honoring culture in the work we do to advance the health and wellbeing of young people in communities across South Carolina and North Carolina, is vital.

I take this time each year to learn and reflect but also share moments of joy. I encourage you to bring the spirit of innovation and uplift each other as we work together. Share in the joy, the resilience and pride in Black History Month celebrations this year.

I challenge you to support Black-owned businesses, visit a museum exhibit dedicated to Black history, volunteer or donate to Black-led nonprofits and learn something new about the rich history and culture that continues to inspire progress.
