Enhancing Service Delivery through Affirming and Inclusive Communication

This six-hour workshop is designed for youth-serving professionals who aim to refine their communication and service delivery skills to create more inclusive and affirming environments for all. This training will cover essential aspects of inclusive language, cultural competency, and practical strategies for providing affirming services to diverse youth populations, including LGBTQ+ individuals.  

Speakers:

Tanya Bass

Tanya M. Bass, PhD, MEd, MS, CHES, CSE is a national award-winning sexuality educator and a subject matter expert in the areas of health equity and sexual health. She is an alumna of North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) Department of Public Health Education and the Center for Human Sexuality Studies at Widener University. Dr. Bass is the Founder of the NC Sexual Health Conference and the lead instructor for Human Sexuality at NCCU.
Dr. Tanya is a highly requested trainer, facilitator, and keynote speaker. Much of her work has been in collaboration with community-based organizations, churches, academic institutions, and state and national organizations. She has served as co-chair for the 2014 National Sex Ed Conference and the 2020 and 2021 American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapist (AASECT) virtual Conferences. Tanya is a current member of the editorial board for the American Journal of Sexuality Education.
As a facilitator and trainer, audience members and training participants describe Dr. Tanya as “dynamic, energetic and captivating”. She is praised for her ability to connect with a multitude of audiences.
As a member of the North Carolina Society for Public Health Education (NCSOPHE), the Association of Black Sexologist and Clinicians (ABSC), and the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT), she remains engaged in professional growth and development. Dr. Bass is an AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator and a Certified Health Education Specialist.

 

Dominique Hector Ph.D., MPH, CHES®

North Carolina Central University

Dr. Dominique J. Hector is an Assistant Professor of Public Health Education at North Carolina Central University, where he contributes to the advancement of public health education through teaching, research, and community engagement. A native of Daphne, Alabama, Dr. Hector has dedicated his career to addressing health disparities and fostering equitable health practices.
Dr. Hector earned his Bachelor of Science in Health Disparities from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he pioneered the development of the Health Disparities undergraduate program in collaboration with the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. He furthered his education with a Master of Public Health, focusing on Health Education and Promotion, from the University of Southern Mississippi. In 2023, he completed his Ph.D. in Health Education and Promotion at UAB. His dissertation explored innovative mentorship strategies to support LGBTQ+ youth across the Deep South.
Dr. Hector's professional experience spans roles in public health practice and education. Notable accomplishments include implementing the rapid Anti-Retroviral Therapy initiative and community health worker navigation systems at UAB’s 1917 Clinic, as well as managing PrEP Clinic operations for AIDS Alabama. He has also taught extensively, serving as an Adjunct Instructor at UAB and designing coursework to prepare future public health professionals.
At NCCU, Dr. Hector leads community-based participatory research to address cultural and social determinants of health affecting HBCU campuses and their surrounding communities. He teaches courses such as "Foundations of Public Health" and "Organization & Administration of Health Education Programs."
An advocate for inclusivity and community empowerment, Dr. Hector’s work has been recognized with multiple awards and honors. He is a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Eta Sigma Gamma National Health Honorary, and the American Public Health Association, among other organizations.
With a passion for mentorship and policy innovation, Dr. Hector remains committed to advancing health equity and educating the next generation of public health leaders.
